Photography Contest Cas Oorthuys
Do you have a passion for photography? Then participate in our photography contest commemorating the exhibition of Cas Oorthuys, a resistance photographer. Get inspired by Oorthuys work and submit your best photo.
If your submission is one of the three winning photos, it will be included in the exhibition and published in newspaper Het Parool. This gives you the unique opportunity to show your work to a large audience. Whether you are a professional photographer or just starting out, everyone is welcome to participate.
These are the entries so far
Participate
Cas Oorthuys took no less than half a million images during his lifetime and contributed to at least two hundred photo books. From stealthy photos during the Second World War, to workers in factories and resurgent cities during post-war reconstruction. He also travels frequently from Europe to Africa. With his photo series, Cas always tells a story. And those stories show, throughout his oeuvre, his commitment to his fellow man.
Do you share his passion for photography and have you been inspired by his work? Then join this photo competition! Grab your camera and delve into the themes that were important to him: 'Resistance' and 'Humanity'.
Note! The photo must comply with at least one of these typical 'Cas Oorthuys style elements':
- Square format
- Black and white
- Hipshot
The photo contest is over. The winners will be announced soon.
- For participating in the contest, a high-resolution image is not required, but winners must be able to provide it later for the production of the photo in the exhibition (50cm high and/or 50cm wide, 300dpi, maximum 10MB)
- Please include your name and the title of the photo in the file name
- In the accompanying email, please explain how this photo was inspired by Cas Oorthuys. Optionally, you can also include the location and date when the photo was taken
Jury and prizes
From all the submissions, the jury selects three winning photos. The jury members are: Liesbeth van der Horst (Director of the Dutch Resistance Museum Amsterdam), Eva de Vos (Director of Photography of newspaper Het Parool), and Frank Oorthuys (son of Cas Oorthuys).:
The photographers win:
- Inclusion of their photo in the exhibition Cas Oorthuys, Resistance Photographer
- Invitation to the festive unveiling on Thursday, October 19, 2023
- Publication in Het Parool and various media outlets of the Verzetsmuseum
- A high-quality print on aluminum of the winning photo after the exhibition concludes

Photographic rights
The copyright of the photo remains with the photographer, but by submitting a photo, the photographer grants permission to the Dutch Resistance Museum and Het Parool to use this photo freely and without charge in the exhibition and publications (with attribution to the photographer), both in print and online.
